As of this writing, it’s not yet clear whether the Red Wings are done maneuvering before the trade deadline, but Detroit did announce one more transaction Friday afternoon. The Red Wings have placed Carter Mazur on Injured Reserve (which will keep him out of action for at least seven days) and re-called forward Dominik Shine from Grand Rapids.
Mazur, of course, suffered an unfortunate injury Thursday night, bringing his NHL debut to an abrupt end after just two shifts and 70 seconds of ice time. Shine, of course, enjoyed something resembling folk hero status when he made his NHL debut in late January at 27 years old. Amidst the chaos of the trade deadline, it’s easy to forget that. the Red Wings have a game to play Friday night in Washington against the Capitals, owners of the best record in the Eastern Conference.

After Mazur’s injury Thursday night, Detroit went into that game with just 12 healthy forwards, and after the game, coach Todd McLellan indicated that the Red Wings would likely recall a forward as insurance. Detroit proceeded to trade out forward Joe Veleno, bringing back another forward in Craig Smith in addition to goaltender Petr Mrazek, but it’s not yet clear Smith would be able to join the Red Wings in D.C. in time for tonight’s game. Shine—who notched one assist in four games in his first call-up—will provide the Red Wings with an immediate option should Smith not be able to join them for that game and a short-term insurance option once he does.
