The idea of Cam Ward playing for the New Orleans Saints always felt like a long shot. It wasn’t impossible, but it would have required a king’s ransom to get the Tennessee Titans out of the number one overall pick. Kellen Moore and a chunk of the Saints coaching staff attending the Miami pro day, displayed a clear interest from the team. Enough interest to wonder if the Saints would pay that ransom.
It allowed for the door to stay cracked just slightly. The Titans canceling private workouts with Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders essentially slams that door closed. The first overall pick will be either Ward or Abdul Carter, but it’ll be the Titans making that selection regardless.
If Tennessee was open to trading that pick, a trade with the New York Giants would certainly remain on the table. It would make sense to still visit with these four prospects if you were dropping to third overall because at least two of them would be available. But Tennessee’s reported asking price for the first pick is sky-high, and it feels unlikely that a team would bite.
All signs point to the Titans at least making the selection. If they don’t pick Ward, it’s hard to imagine the Cleveland Browns passing up on him. The Saints’s best chance at grabbing the quarterback was trading to the first pick.
