Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was not a first-round NFL draft pick, and he said the quiet parts out loud so everyone else wouldn’t have to.
On Thursday, when the 2025 NFL Draft kicked off at Lambeau Field, Miami quarterback Cam Ward was the first pick and QB off the board. What happened after that was anyone’s guess, but many pundits anticipated that Sanders would be the next quarterback following Ward. Instead, it was Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, and eventually, the first round came and went without Sanders being selected.
“We all didn’t expect this, of course,” Sanders said at his draft party. (Uh, same. Still wrapping my mind around it.)
“I feel like with God, anything [is] possible ― everything possible. I don’t feel like this happened, you know, for no reason. All this is, of course, is fuel to the fire.”
Listen, NFL. I can buy that Sanders might slide down a few spots. However, totally out of the first round? What have you done? What sort of bulletin board material have you given this man? (Not to mention, people have already found an old Deion Sanders tweet, which is, uh, not great.)
I’m not sure I have the answer to why he fell so far down the board, but somebody, please, fix this. (Saints? Steelers? Browns?) Sanders is right. There is no way this should have ever happened.
Let’s hope Sanders doesn’t have to wait too long on Day 2 to hear his name called. I fear the consequences of such a thing.
