After an initial report on Tuesday that Pittsburgh trade talks for Miami tight end Jonnu Smith had cooled, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that circumstances had changed on Tuesday evening.
According to Schefter’s sources, a trade for the Dolphins’ Smith is still alive in Pittsburgh.
After another development on Tuesday in the Steel City, Pittsburgh may have some added urgency to get a deal for Smith done, too.
Pittsburgh tight end Donald Parham Jr. suffered a torn Achilles during Tuesday’s OTAs. The former Chargers tight end has appeared in 47 career games and was expected to factor in for reps alongside Darnell Washington behind Pat Freiermuth.
Now, the franchise has much more incentive to address that room in a hurry.
Smith is entering the final year of a two-year, $8.4 million contract that he signed with Miami in March of 2024. The 6-foot-3, 248-pound tight end is also on the heels of a career year.
The eight-year pro caught 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said on Tuesday that he felt Smith wanted to be in Miami.
But, the likelihood of that could obviously change if the Steelers could put together a package that the Dolphins’ front office deems is too good to pass up on.
