Sterling Shepard cannot say enough good things about Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield was not himself on Sunday, plain and simple. For as good as he looked in 2024, the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback looked like a shell of himself for the majority of the game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Mayfield was missing throws, even the easy ones, where he was hitting them last year. Could his missing the preseason have played a factor in that slow start? Perhaps. One thing is for sure, though, despite all the misses in Week 1, his wide receivers remain uber confident in him.

Specifically, Sterling Shepard, who spoke to the media and couldn’t hide his amazement at seeing Mayfield work on Sunday.

Shepard hyped up his college quarterback, saying, “He is just a special player. You talk about all those throws, but nobody really knows what that man has to go through throughout the week and all the preparation that he goes through. He is on his P’s and Q’s all day. He is there for me — if I did not hear the play, he has to tell me what to do. He has to look at the defense and tell the backs where to go — where to bump — so [there is] a lot going on in his brain, but he is able to handle it. You saw the dart he threw to ‘Mek’ (Emeka Egbuka) on the game-winner — I mean, that is an unreal throw.”

When Baker Mayfield is at his best, there may not be many quarterbacks better than him. He is finally considered a top ten quarterback, but he didn’t play like one on Sunday. He has a chance to prove people wrong on Sunday against the Houston Texans.
