Students at Zeeland High earn title at Esports Championships

ZEELAND — A team of students from Zeeland Public Schools recently took home first place in a statewide esports tournament.

The Zeeland High School Esports Team participated in the Michigan High School Esports Federation Spring 2025 State Championships at the University of Michigan-Flint on April 26, competing in several different events.

The team’s Rainbow Six Siege, comprised of Evan Schuberg, Richard Lovejoy, Ethan Malefyt, Drake Conley, Isaiah Lett and Brent Strabbing, secured the state championship, according to a release from the district.

Zeeland’s team topped Hill McCoy High School in the semifinals before beating previously undefeated East Kentwood in a “thrilling three-match overtime” in the finals.

In addition, Zeeland’s Valorant Team, led by Dave Dong, finished in third place. Isaac Sietsema, in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Solo, and Alex Long, in Mario Kart, also qualified for and competed at the state finals.

In total, the spring event saw more than 70 schools and 400 students competing for titles in 15 events.
