Texas Football DB now a semifinalist for prestigious leadership award

Michael Taaffe earns special recognition

Longhorns star Michael Taaffe is once again making headlines. One Tuesday, the talented defensive back was named one of 20 semifinalists for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year. The award, which is given annually, focuses on a player’s leadership, both on and off the field.

For the Longhorns, this is an award they are familiar with. Last season, center Jake Majors was selected to the watch list. Sam Ehlinger was the last Texas player to take home the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year in 2021. Like Majors and Ehlinger, Taaffe is more than deserving, as he has become a vital piece for Steve Sarkisian due to his play and impact off the field.

Since beginning his Longhorns career, the Austin native has become a force in the community. He has been working with Texas Against Fentanyl, an organization that raises awareness and education about fentanyl. His work does not stop there, as Taaffe has partnered with Crime Stoppers of Houston’s Million for Million Campaign that raises awareness about fentanyl.

As the talented senior has helped those around him, he has been a human highlight reel on the field. In six games this season, Taaffe has recorded a team high 41 total tackles. He has also added one sack and an interception to his resume. With him off to a stellar start, the defense has created headaches for offensive coordinators.

While the former walk-on is focused on bringing a national title to Austin, he will be closely watching how voting for this award plays out. The list will be narrowed down to three finalists on December 16th. After a few months of anticipation, a winner will be crowned on April 16.

Following the Longhorns’ best win of the season, Taaffe will be back in action on Saturday night when Texas takes on Kentucky.
