The Athletic ranks USC’s Jayden Maiava as the No. 54 QB in the country

After starting the final four games of the 2024 season at quarterback for USC, Jayden Maiava enters 2025 as the Trojans’ likely starter under center. But where does he rank among QBs in the country?

In a recent story, The Athletic’s Antonio Morales and Sam Kahn Jr. ranked all 136 FBS starting quarterbacks and grouped them into seven tiers. USC’s Jayden Maiava came in at No. 54, ranking in Tier 4.

Here was Morales and Khan’s description of what constitutes a Tier 4 QB.

“Some are young, unproven starters with high potential,” they wrote. “Others are veterans who have flashed great talent but hit performance or injury speed bumps somewhere along the way.”

Maiava seems to be a combination of the two. Although he is now a redshirt junior entering his fourth season of college football, he has only started four games in head coach Lincoln Riley’s system, and is still somewhat unproven.

Interestingly, former USC quarterback Miller Moss, who transferred to Louisville this offseason, also ranked in Tier 4, coming in at No. 44. This season, Maiava will look to prove that Riley made the right decision going with him over Moss, while Moss will look to prove his doubters wrong in the ACC.
