Twitter reacts to JL Skinner blocking a punt with his face

In the third quarter of last Thursday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos punter JL Skinner blocked a punt (with his face) and Denver’s offense took over at the 12-yard line.

Despite that advantageous field position, the Broncos were not able to score a touchdown — but they did kick a field goal, which ended up being the game-winning score in an eventual 10-7 victory. So that Skinner block proved to be crucial.

“I think, man, just in such a low-scoring game… when you block a punt, I mean, that’s significant,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said after the win.

Fans and pundits on social media were amused by Skinner’s unorthodox method for the block.

“He is [a] guy that is just going out there to be in his words – I’m not saying this – but he likes to call himself a crash out,” teammate Talanoa Hufanga said of Skinner. “So he’s a crash out. Sure enough, the ball hit him right in the face. So that’s a good one for the team.”

Skinner said after the win that he was just trying to make a play for the team.

“I just kind of dipped my shoulder a little bit into them and just drive and crank is what we teach a little — and it just worked,” the safety said. “It worked out. We worked on that technique a lot during the spring, so I just really brought what they taught me into fruition.”

Up next on Denver’s schedule is a home game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 16.
