Vote for the Bloomington area preseason baseball player of the year

Bloomington area baseball teams will be taking to the fields this week, which means it’s time for readers to pick their preseason player of the year in the latest Herald-Times poll.

Congratulations to South’s Carly Reed, who was the readers’ choice for preseason softball player of the year, garnering 43% of the vote to top teammate Abby Purtlebaugh (27.6).

Bragging rights are on the line, so readers can vote as much as they like until Friday at noon. Here is the list of nominees:

Jacob Bellman, Eastern Greene, Sr. SS/P: Hit .364 (24-66), 15 RBIs, 20 runs scored. Went 4-0 with a 3.40 ERA, striking out 22 over 22⅔ innings.

Calvin Dean, Owen Valley, Sr. P/SS: One of OV’s top hitters (.346) and pitchers (36 strikeouts in 34⅓ innings) last year.

Luke Freel, North, Jr. P/OF: 1-0 with a save and 3.08 ERA with 34 strikeouts to just 17 walks over 25 innings.

Rhet Heckman, Owen Valley, Sr. P/INF: Patriots top hitter back at .412 will also return to the mound this year after Tommy John surgery. 

Xavier Hemingway, South, Jr. P: Panthers’ ace last year went 2-2 with a 4.01 ERA, 29 strikeouts and just five walks over 43⅔ innings.

Nolan Hudson, Edgewood, Jr. P: Top arm for the Mustangs was 4-0 with a 1.17 ERA, giving up just 18 hits and walking only seven with 17 strikeouts over 24 innings.

Will Inman, Edgewood, Sr. P: Transfer from Eastern Greene was 4-3 with 2.87 ERA and 34 strikeouts and hit .365 (31-85) with seven doubles and team high 22 RBIs.

Peyton Lewis, Eastern Greene, Sr. DH/1B: Hit .324 with five homers with five doubles and 18 RBIs to finish with a .606 slugging percentage and scored a team high 25 runs.

Collin Marcum, South, Jr. P/OF: Indiana commit saw his season shortened by injury last year, going 3-1 with a 5.53 ERA before he was shut down.

Connor Osborne, South, Sr. RF/P: Hit .380 with six doubles, three triples and a homer to drive in 23 runs. Scored 24 runs and played error-free in the outfield. As a pitcher, struck out 15 over 11 innings.

Liam Smith, North, Jr. RF: Cougars’ top returning hitter at .274 with six doubles and eight RBIs.
