What score did Masters champions shoot in the first round at Augusta

Only five golfers have won the Masters wire-to-wire, but what scores recent winners post in round one on their way to the green jacket?

In the history of the Masters, only five golfers have ever led the tournament at the conclusion of the first three rounds and gone on to be wire-to-wire winners, so while it is not critical to have the first-round lead at Augusta National, every golfer in the field wants to post a good score.

But what have been the opening-round scores of recent Masters winners?

While the average round one score of the Masters winner since 2000 is 69.5, Tiger Woods won the 2005 Masters after shooting an opening-round 74, and three players have gone on to win after shooting an even-par 72.

As you can see in the chart below, the lowest opening-round score by a Masters winner since 2000 was turned in by Jordan Spieth in 2015 when he shot 64. That is one shot more than the Masters scoring record for 18 holes, 63, which was shot by Nick Price in the third round in 1986 and Greg Norman in the first round in 1996.
