The Miami Dolphins technically went undefeated in preseason with a pair of wins and a tie. The regular season is on deck, but the Dolphins have some unfortunate business to handle first.
By Tuesday afternoon, every team in the NFL has to cut down from the 90-player limit of the summer to meet the 53-man limit of the fall. That means over 1,000 players in the NFL getting jettisoned, including about three dozen Dolphins.
“One of my least favorite days that exist,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel told reporters last week. “And this one is probably going to be the worst that we’ve had just based on there’s a lot of roster battles that will be decided today and as well as the preseason game in a couple nights.”
So who earned a spot, who will hit free agency, and who will return as a member of the practice squad? We’ll track all the Dolphins’ moves right here:
Dolphins release OL Jackson Carman and OL Jalen McKenzie
Neither release is particularly surprising. Carman, a former Bengals draft pick, joined the Dolphins in the 2024 season and McKenzie was signed early in training camp.
Dolphins part with RB Mike Boone
Boone was added to the roster two weeks ago along with running back Aaron Shampklin after Alexander Mattison suffered a season-ending neck injury. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, Boone may return on the practice squad.
Dolphins cut veteran CB Mike Hilton
The release of Hilton is a bit of surprise considering his starting pedigree and Miami’s lack of experience at the cornerback position. However, rookie Jason Marshall Jr. emerged late in training camp as an enticing option in the slot, likely pushing Hilton off the roster.
Dolphins to waive RB Aaron Shampklin
Shampklin’s departure comes just a couple weeks after he was added by the Dolphins in response to injuries at the position, including season-ending neck surgery for Alexander Mattison.
53-man roster projection
Dolphins Wire’s Jason Sarney took a swing at predicting which players make the team. On his roster, the Dolphins keep six wide receivers and have to make some tough cuts, including veteran linebacker Quinton Bell.
