The Chicago Bears began their offseason program this week, their first opportunity to begin working with new head coach Ben Johnson and the highly regarded coaching staff he built around him. One of the biggest additions on Johnson’s coaching staff was hiring veteran defensive coordinator and former head coach Dennis Allen.
Throughout his respected coaching career, Allen has established himself as one of the best defensive coaches in the league, so his arrival in Chicago has come with excitement and high expectations. Bears star cornerback Jaylon Johnson can already feel the difference with Allen in town and discussed what his new defensive coordinator will do to help put him in position to continue to excel as one of the best in the league.
Wanting to face the opponent’s best receivers week in and week out, Johnson told reporters on Tuesday that Allen will allow him to do just that.
“No. 1 on No. 1…that’s what I train for…dogs eat (up front) and we’ll cover on the back end,” Johnson said. “…(Playing man coverage) is what I feel like I’m the best at.”
Since entering the league in 2020, Johnson has established himself as one of the best coverage cornerbacks in the league but has not had the support around him to emphasize his abilities. With Allen now leading the charge, Johnson and the entire defense should see their play elevated to the next level as Chicago tries to reestablish their glory days as a dominant defensive force.
