Brutal: NFL analyst says Commanders defense looked like ‘a scout team’

After a film review this week, one analyst says the Washington Commanders’ defense was so bad….

Former Maryland Terrapins receiver/return Steve Suter discussed his film review of the Commanders’ 44-22 loss to the Lions in Week 10. Suter has been watching the All-22 and reviewing the Commanders’ games this season each week on the “Kevin Sheehan Show” podcast. Suter said the Commanders’ defense was so bad against the Lions, and here are a few of the selected quotes from Suter’s film review.

  • “My first thought was, ‘I don’t know if Sheehan is going to want to do this with me for seven more weeks’.” Suder explained that the Commanders are so bad, he didn’t know if he could honestly provide anything positive or light at the end of the tunnel.

  • “Watching the All-22 of the game, I wondered what I was watching here, and then it dawned on me, I am watching a scout team on defense. It was almost a scripted practice for the Lions.”

  • Suter provided a specific example, saying the play that Lions’ running back Jahmyr Gibbs scored on, “it looked like a walk-through. Von Miller, you are going to get sealed easily, you don’t care, you are not giving any effort. Luvu you are not going to take on Sewell, you are tired it is the fourth quarter. You are just going to go over there and get blown up. Everybody just walked to where they were supposed to go (according to the Lions), and they blocked them all with ease and scored a touchdown.”

  • “That’s not an NFL team or 11 players that should be in on defense. If you are a Washington fan, anytime Martin and Kinlaw are not on the field, it’s buckle up. It’s not gonna work. You are not going to stop the run. You are not going to put any pressure on the passer. Whatever they call it is not going to work.”

  • “They are trying to figure out who can play defensive end. I even saw Sheldon Day (age 31, played DT his entire NFL career) at D-end. Suter said that every time one of the tackles is out there trying to play end, they look lost and do not know what they are doing.

  • “I would like to think, I think Detroit could have won this game without throwing one pass. And I am not even blowing smoke there. They could have handed the ball off every play and scored 24 points and won this game. I strongly believe that. You could see on the All-22 the Lions change the line of scrimmage by two or three yards every running play. So there is no chance.”

  • “Not a chance in hell you are stopping anybody on defense for the foreseeable future.”

Brutal. It’s refreshing to see an honest assessment rather than just pointing out the good things. There were no good things last week, or the last few weeks really. This week, head coach Dan Quinn will take over the defensive coordinator role and call plays against the Miami Dolphins.

Good luck.
