In a surprising move during NFL cut days, the Pittsburgh Steelers cut veteran wide receiver Robert Woods, but brought him back to be a member of the practice squad. Recently, Woods would surprise the organization by asking for his release.
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Woods has been granted the release by Pittsburgh. A source says he only wants to continue playing if he’s on a 53-man roster and playing,” Rapoport wrote on X. “The Steelers handled the request solidly and understood.”
Over the course of his career, Woods has 683 catches for 8,233 yards and 38 touchdowns. During which he has played for the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans, and the Houston Texans. Coming off the 2024 campaign with the Texans, Woods would not have a great season, only catching 20 passes for 203 yards.
Woods is a former Super Bowl champion, and if he isn’t allowed to be guaranteed a shot on the active roster, he may retire at 33 years old. With D.K. Metcalf at WR1, the Steelers look to be all in on wide receiver Calvin Austin to progress him up the depth chart for the foreseeable future.
