‘Best fight I’ve ever seen’: Petr Yan’s UFC 323 upset of Merab Dvalishvili leaves MMA world dumbfounded

Petr Yan may have been the only person in Las Vegas on Saturday night who believed he’d dethrone Merab Dvalishvili for the bantamweight title at UFC 323. But even he couldn’t have foreseen the dominance he’d put forth in doing so.

In one of the greatest against-the-odds performances in recent memory, Yan toppled MMA’s frontrunner for Fighter of the Year and recaptured the UFC bantamweight championship with a lopsided upset of Dvalishvili to cap off the final UFC pay-per-view of the year — and potentially ever. Yan defended 27 of Dvalishvili’s 29 takedowns attempts, landed five of his own, and soundly out-struck the feared Georgian to secure a revenge win few saw coming.

The performance was so thorough and shocking that even Yan’s fellow fighters couldn’t quite believe what they were watching, especially considering Dvalishvili entered the night riding the longest win streak in UFC bantamweight division history (13), and also the fourth-longest win streak in overall company history (14).
