Commanders’ Dan Quinn gives update on injured OL Sam Cosmi

One of the reasons Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was so successful in 2024 is because of his offensive line. No, they weren’t at the top of the league, but they did enough to give him the time he needed. That’s their job, and they did it well. In the divisional round of the playoffs, though, a key piece of that offensive line went down. Right guard Sam Cosmi tore his ACL, which meant missing the NFC Championship game and a portion of the 2025 season.

The Commanders tried to plug the hole with Trent Scott, who played well, but Cosmi has a different impact on the players around him. Which is why Commanders’ fans should be thrilled to hear that Cosmi’s recovery is going very well.

“Sam is doing excellent,” said head coach Dan Quinn. “Like he has really put the work in. He’s hitting all the markers that he’s supposed to. We’re not gonna miss one step along the process. But it starts with him, man, like just the everyday intensity that goes with it.

“There’s like a work mindset that comes outta that and…that’s important because that’s who Sam is, and he’s off to a really strong start hitting all the markers he’s supposed to up to now.”

Cosmi had his ACL surgically repaired after the Commanders’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which ended their season. He was seen jogging on the sidelines at the final minicamp practice. While he will still miss a portion of the 2025 season, Cosmi’s recovery has gone smoothly so far, and it’s largely because of his attitude.

“I’m just gonna attack this like I have everything in my whole entire career, my life,” Cosmi said. “I said this whenever I got the extension: how much work you put in is what you’re going to get out. That’s what I’m going to do with this, and hopefully, I’ll be back on the football field way sooner than expected.”

When that happens, the Commanders will have an offensive line battle for who starts, and that’s not a bad problem to have.

The 6-foot-6, 309-pound lineman isn’t going to back down from any other player on the football field, so he’s certainly not going to let this injury keep him down either. And when he gets back into the lineup, he will elevate the offensive line as he has for the last four seasons.
