Eagles-Cowboys live updates: Super Bowl champs open 2025 season vs. NFC East rival tonight

PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles started their 2025 season with a 24-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys. But it was far from pretty.

See how it all unfolded below, and stay tuned for updates from the Eagles’ locker room on PennLive tonight and throughout the weekend.

FOURTH QUARTER

1:27 — Eagles 24, Cowboys 20

Game over. A third-and-3 scramble from Jalen Hurts picks up the first down and allows the Eagles to kneel this one out.

1:54 — Eagles 24, Cowboys 20

The Eagles got some help from CeeDee Lamb. One of the best receivers in the league decided to drop a couple passes on Dallas’ comeback attempt, including one on fourth-and-3. Philly will take it. Turnover on downs.

3:02 — Eagles 24, Cowboys 20

The Eagles had a chance to ice the game … and they went three-and-out. It’s up to the defense.

4:43 — Eagles 24, Cowboys 20

Nick Sirianni often talks about the importance of a four-minute offense. The Eagles have the ball at their own 24-yard line with a chance to ice the game. Will Saquon Barkley and the run game do their job like they did all last year? Will Jalen Hurts finally target A.J. Brown? We’ll find out.

A second spitter

We haven’t had any scoring since the game resumed from a lightning delay. But we do have more context around Jalen Carter’s ejection for spitting on Dak Prescott.

NBC showed footage of Prescott spitting in Carter’s direction — not on him — and smiling at the Eagles’ defensive tackle before Carter spat on the Cowboys quarterback. It doesn’t excuse Carter’s actions. But it does give some semblance of a reason why he would do what he did.

We also got an explanation from the NFL referee, Shawn Smith, on why he ejected Carter.

THIRD QUARTER

Lightning delay update

With 4:44 to go in the third quarter — just before 10:30 p.m. — the game was suspended due to lightning. Both teams retreated to their respective locker rooms, and fans left the seating area at Lincoln Financial Field.

One hour later, we’ll have football again. The delay is expected to resume at 11:30 p.m. Both teams have a warmup period beginning at 11:15 p.m.

8:30 — Eagles 24, Cowboys 20

Jake Elliott, wow. Elliott drills a 58-yard field goal that would have been good from 65. Great start for the veteran who went 1/7 from field goals of 50-plus yards last season.

SECOND QUARTER

0:00 — Eagles 21, Cowboys 20

Dallas, aided by a roughing the passer flag on Nolan Smith, executed a seven-play field goal drive at the end of the half. Brandon Aubrey remains automatic, drilling one from 53 yards to end an absolutely bonkers first half.

0:51 — Eagles 21, Cowboys 17

Can confirm that Saquon Barkley is still really, really good. He’s made some impressive runs tonight with little space to work with, bobbing and weaving through the Cowboys’ defense. He did it there for his first touchdown of the season, a 10-yard plunge into the end zone. Speaking of former Penn State stars, Jahan Dotson made a 51-yard catch on that drive, showing his chemistry with Jalen Hurts.

2:34 — Cowboys 17, Eagles 14

Brandon Aubrey’s 41-yard field goal is good. A taunting penalty by Eagles edge rusher Nolan Smith after tackling former Eagles running back Miles Sanders was a killer.

6:46 — Eagles 14, Cowboys 14

Jalen Hurts, again. The Cowboys cannot stop him from scrambling. Hurts makes it look easy.

14:56 — Cowboys 14, Eagles 7

Javonte Williams scores his second of the night. If the Eagles’ run defense without Jalen Carter continues to play like this — and if Dak Prescott continues to target Adoree’ Jackson — this is going to be a high-scoring affair.

FIRST QUARTER

5:55 — Eagles 7, Cowboys 7

The Eagles delivered an emphatic response to the Cowboys’ opening touchdown drive. Philly went 70 yards on seven plays, capped by a three-yard Jalen Hurts scramble into the end zone.

11:49 — Cowboys 7, Eagles 0

Dallas strikes first with a goal-line score from Javonte Williams. It was all set up by a 32-yard catch from CeeDee Lamb. One of the best receivers in the NFL cooked Adoree’ Jackson.

14:54 — Jalen Carter ejected

Well, that’s one way to start the season. Jalen Carter, the Eagles’ star defensive tackle, was tossed after spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott. Carter, an All-Pro selection last year, was escorted off the field by Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro. And that was after fullback Ben VanSumeren injured his knee on the opening kickoff; VanSumeren was ruled out shortly after.

Super Bowl banner revealed

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and franchise legend Brandon Graham led a “Fly Eagles Fly” chant. Then, the Super Bowl LIX banner was unveiled on the east side of the stadium.

It read: “2024 World Champions.”

It was a cool moment. But Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts and Co. weren’t too interested in the banner ceremony. They were in the locker room for the ceremony, mentally preparing for their first test of the 2025 season.

Being around the players and coaches all summer, the message was clear: the Eagles aren’t “defending” anything. Barkley’s 2,000-yard season, blowing out the Kansas City Chiefs, all of that is in the rearview mirror. The Birds are charting a new course.

Pregame updates

— Second-round rookie Andrew Mukuba is warming up with the first-team defense, which is a slight surprise. Sydney Brown was expected to start with Mukuba recently missing time due to minor injuries. We’ll see how the ballhawk from Texas does.

— As expected, Adoree’ Jackson warmed up as the CB2. Neither Jackson nor Kelee Ringo had an impressive training camp, leading to Howie Roseman trading for Raiders corner Jakorian Bennett. But Jackson latched onto the starting job (at least for now) opposite Quinyon Mitchell in nickel.

— The Eagles will be a little thin at edge rusher with Azeez Ojulari and Ogbo Okoronkwo ruled out. Vic Fangio will likely implement a three-man rotation: Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt starting with Josh Uche getting into the mix.
