Greene Gable set plenty of records on way to UNA Athletic HOF

May 24—Lindsey Greene Gable paused for a couple of seconds and asked if that was right. Just for clarification purposes. She wasn't quite sure.

So, she was one of just 10 North Alabama student-athletes in school history to be named first-team all-conference for four consecutive years? In any sport?

Yes. And yes.

"I didn't know that," Greene Gable said.

It's true. Her dad will be likely to brag about it later. Maybe even tell her three daughters with husband Justin how good their mom was.

And it's not the only thing Green Gable, who also played at Austin High, accomplished during her softball career.

During her playing days with the Lions from 2005-08, Greene Gable set school career records for most at bats (713), most hits (266), best batting average (.373), most runs scored (188) and most walks (108). She set three single-season marks in 2006 with 66 runs scored, 52 runs batted in and 47 walks.

In 2005, Greene Gable was named the Gulf South Conference East Division freshman of the year.

In the fall, Greene Gable will be honored as part of the UNA Athletic Hall of Fame's 36th class along with Tavarius Wilson, Willie Slater, Tim Garner, Casey Holt, and Brett Munson. The six will be recognized Oct. 18 as part of the school's homecoming celebrations.

"Honestly, I never really thought about that stuff," Greene Gable said. "I was just thinking about finding a way to continue playing after high school and maybe a way to help pay for college."

It worked out.

For Green Gable and especially for UNA, which secured its first 40-win season and first NCAA tournament appearance in the South Region in 2006.

Even if the recruiting technique to catch UNA's attention was old-school — at least, by today's standard.

"When I was in high school, my coach at Austin, Butch Wright, did a video of the ones who wanted to go to college and play," Greene Gable said. "He was going to send it to whichever schools we were interested in going to. My best friend, Lindsey Wallace, then Lindsey Bates, (UNA) was a place we talked about going. We both ended up there. It was close to home, but still far enough away."

Funny enough, home — Decatur — is where Greene Gable is back. Still around softball, just in a different role.

Coach Lindsey.

"I loved playing and still would love to play," Greene Gable said. "Being able to coach our children and other kids, I think I enjoy it more. You get to build those relationships and help kids build relationships that can last forever."
