Insider weighs in on Arch Manning’s performance with Texas: ‘Ultimately, it was terrible’

Paul Finebaum couldn’t stop raving about Arch Manning ahead of his season-opener against Ohio State.

The SEC pundit predicted the Texas quarterback would “perform beautifully” against the defending national champions, and called him “the best player we have seen from every aspect since Tim Tebow.”

But following Manning’s woeful performance in No. 1 Texas’ 14-7 loss to No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday, Finebaum changed his tune.

Manning completed 17-of-30 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

“You start to worry a little bit about your predictions when Arch has more commercials in the first quarter than he does completions,” Finebaum said Sunday on SportsCenter. “Ultimately, he was terrible. There’s no getting around it, and all the predictions that some people made were shatteringly wrong. They were absurd, but I don’t think everybody should panic yet. This is the first game as the full fledged starter.

“I believe Texas will be in the playoffs in December, and I think Arch Manning will learn from this….He will get better. He simply got bamboozled by a much better defensive coordinator [Matt Patricia], and it was all she wrote.”
