The New York Giants released a quarterback on Tuesday. In their effort to trim the roster from 90 players to 53, New York released popular backup quarterback Tommy DeVito. The Giants kept veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, alongside promising first-round pick Jaxson Dart.
Now, DeVito suddenly becomes one of, if not the best, veteran quarterbacks available for teams needing a backup. While the Washington Commanders don’t need a backup to Jayden Daniels, they have Marcus Mariota; they could be looking for a No. 3 quarterback.
Why not DeVito?
There’s a good chance DeVito could have multiple suitors. The Tennessee Titans hold the No. 1 claim in the waiver order and badly need a quality backup to rookie Cam Ward. Other NFC East teams, like the Dallas Cowboys, could also use DeVito.
The 27-year-old DeVito was an undrafted free agent in 2023. He was forced into action as a rookie that season, struggled early, but then led the Giants to a win over the Commanders. In that game, DeVito completed 18 of 26 passes for 246 yards with three touchdowns. He led New York to three consecutive wins that season, even earning NFC Player of the Month honors once.
He opened the 2024 season as the Giants’ No. 3 quarterback. He would start two games for New York last season and returned in 2025. Much to the chagrin of Giants’ fans, DeVito was released on Tuesday.
He’ll have options.
Josh Johnson and Sam Hartman struggled for the Commanders in the preseason. You’d think with a quarterback like Daniels and an established veteran like Mariota, they wouldn’t keep three passers. However, Mariota dealt with Achilles tendinitis throughout training camp. So, keeping three quarterbacks for a team with Super Bowl aspirations makes sense at least until Mariota is 100%.
Something else to remember: the Commanders play the Giants in Week 1 — less than two weeks away.
