LB Jordan Magee has impressed defensive coaches, but must stay healthy

The Commanders really need some young guys to step up in 2025.

One of the most needed is linebacker Jordan Magee. Entering his second season out of Temple, the Commanders drafted Magee in the fifth round (139) last year, but injuries kept Magee from developing on the practice field, cutting his reps. He saw action in eight games, with the vast majority of his appearances being on special teams.

Current Washington analyst and former Redskins tight end Logan Paulsen recently told Craig Hoffman on their “Take Command” podcast why he has not yet given up on Magee.

“Jordan Magee is interesting because I thought he did well in training camp last year,” began Paulsen. “But I don’t want to extrapolate too much from training camp, but when you talk to guys on the staff about him, their eyes light up. “

“So, there is something there in terms of energy. Obviously, when you watch his stuff from Temple, He was really good at Temple. He’s physical, he’s athletic. He checks all these boxes that you want for a modern linebacker, you know? Like, when I think about modern linebacker I think, Fred Warner, right?”

“It’s this guy that can cover, can get downhill, can play sideline to sideline, and there were shades of that when he (Magee) played at Temple. Now he has this injury, kind of like Johnny (Newton) did last year, and his developmental role, or his package, or the methodology they were going to use was sidelined, because they had packages for him.”

“They had situations they wanted to use him; they weren’t able to do that. Now, this year, does that process get started? Does he get to show that he is the heir apparent to Bobby Wagner, whenever Wagner chooses to walk away?”

One thing is absolutely certain. The Commanders are unlikely to use Wagner extensively in preseason games. It will be an opportunity for Magee to showcase his abilities and demonstrate his readiness to contribute in the NFL.
