Matt LaFleur ‘not coaching for his job’ vs. Bears per Ian Rapoport

All signs are pointing towards Matt LaFleur sticking around in Green Bay for the long haul, and there were yet more indications of a contract extension being on the horizon for the Packers head coach on Saturday.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported LaFleur is not “coaching for his job” against the Bears in the NFC Wild Card matchup, and that the team and head coach will meet after the conclusion of the season “with the mutual goal of extending his contract.”

LaFleur’s current deal is set to expire after the 2026 campaign, and Rapoport explained it was part of Green Bay’s plan for the coach to have two years left on his contract when new president and CEO Ed Policy took over, giving him a full season to evaluate before making an informed decision.

Since becoming head coach of the Packers in 2019, LaFleur has compiled a 76-40-1 record and has taken the team to the postseason in all but one of his seven seasons in charge, when they lost a “win-and-in” game to the Lions in Aaron Rodgers’ last season in Green Bay.

Only two teams have more regular season wins since LaFleur arrived in Green Bay; the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.

The Packers have not made it to a Super Bowl in LaFleur’s tenure though, and this is the primary criticism from his detractors. They last played in the NFC Championship Game in January of 2021, losing to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.

After Rodgers left, LaFleur oversaw a quick turnaround of the roster and took the youngest roster in the NFL to the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. He has also helped nurture Jordan Love into one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Trading for Micah Parsons put Green Bay among the Super Bowl favorites entering 2025, but a slew of injuries, including an ACL tear for Parsons, contributed to a final stretch of the regular season in which the Packers lost their final four games, finishing 9-7-1 and as the NFC’s No. 7 seed.

But despite the disappointing end to the regular season, it does not seem as though a bad result on Saturday night will impact LaFleur’s standing with Policy, who was part of the process of hiring the head coach back in 2019.

Rapoport said Saturday that the team “likes LaFleur, respects him and believes he’s a great fit both in the organization and in the community” and that all being well, they hope he remains in place as head coach “for a long time.”

LaFleur’s reign has not been perfect and has not achieved the ultimate goal of bringing a title back to Titletown.

But it seems sensible thinking will prevail and based on his excellent track record of getting Green Bay in the dance, LaFleur will be backed by Policy with a new long-term contract and given the chance to eventually get the Packers over the hump.
