Raiders lose backup quarterback to hand injury in preseason game 3

On his first drive of the game, Aidan O’Connell took a hard hit and left for the locker room. He emerged with a brace on his hand and wrist, done for the day and perhaps longer.

Geno Smith and the Raiders first team offense played just one drive against the Cardinals in their final preseason game Saturday night. Aidan O’Connell entered the game as the primary backup, expected to play at least the remainder of the first half. That didn’t happen.

O’Connell was strip sacked on his first drive while dropping back to pass. He came back out for the second drive, but after that, he left the field and headed for the locker room. A bit later, he emerged and returned to the sideline, but with a brace on his hand and wrist.

Third team quarterback Cam Miller entered the game and will go the rest of the way for the Raiders. How severe O’Connell’s injury ends up being could decide whether Miller’s time as the primary backup extends into the regular season.

Miller was on of the Raiders’ sixth round picks in this year’s draft. Miller led North Dakota State to the FCS National Championship this past season. NDSU is a powerhouse program at the FCS level, but this is still a big jump for Miller.
