Saturday night proved Keaton Waglers much-needed precense for Illini in Palestra win over Penn State

PHILADELPHIA — Keaton Wagler is indispensable to Illinois.

Against the best of the best, they can’t survive without him. He’s the type of player who can melt into a game. The kind that provides a 10-0 spark with his elegant movement on the court, high basketball IQ, elite shooting ability, and an ideal positional length at 6-foot-6.

The only problem? He’s an 18-year-old freshman. And on Saturday night, he ran into foul trouble, being charged with his fourth foul only a mere 30 seconds into the second half. With his availability on shaky ground, it forced Wagler to crash into the bench, leaving him with a delirious “craving-for-more-minutes” look on his face.

He may have flown almost too far below the radar as a recruit. It may have taken several tests for everyone to realize. But at the dawn of the new year, and after playing against a handful of top power four opponents and playing its third conference game of the season, Wagler has firmly cemented himself as a staple inside of the 2025-2026 Illinois program.

Illinois’ need for Wagler was on display during the program’s first game at the Palestra since 2003 as the Illini avoided a collapse to Penn State, 73-65.

The Wagler impact

At this point in the season, as wide-eyed as he seemed from all of this even a few months ago, it’s Wagler who more often than not seems in command. Wagler provided a much-needed spark in the first half that led to a bashing 10-0 run to provide a dominant orange and blue complexion to the Plestra.

And then it happened. Illinois head coach Brad Underwood was forced to take out the wunderkind Wagler at the start of the second half. During that span, Illinois’ lead was cut to as close as 10, after leaving the first half with a sizeable 41-29 lead.

Illinois guard Kylan Boswell, though, as the anchor of the program, was able to hold the fort down enough to maintain a lead that at times felt less-than-comfortable. Boswell finished with a game-high 18 points. David Mirkovic added 13 points and 10 boards, a double-double. Obviously, the contributions of Andrej Stojakovic and the Ivisic brothers were also instrumental in this win.

Zvonimir Ivisic seems to have at least one big block per game.

Wagler finished the night with 16 points, two rebounds and three assists. When he returned to the game late in the second half, the impact was subtle but palpable. Wagler drew a couple of key fouls in the waning minutes of the game to keep Penn State out of reasonable reach.

5:24 left in the game. Wagler draws a foul. A 13-point lead gets extended by two points.

4:37 left in the game. Wagler, again, draws a big foul. A 12-point lead gets extended by two points.

Sure, the numbers don’t seem meteoric, but each foul was crucial and maintaining a considerable lead to keep the win at bay.

Stat Stuffers
