2012
Shia and Mia first met while working together on Nymphomaniac: Vol. II in 2012. They eventually struck up a romance and started dating, as Us Weekly reported in December of that year that they had been dating for about a month. The pair were also photographed on a few occasions in Los Angeles, California.
2014
By 2014, Shia and Mia made their red carpet debut together at the London premiere of Shia’s Fury.
2016
After about four years together, Shia and Mia took a major step in their relationship when the X actress was spotted wearing a large diamond ring in 2016. Us Weekly reported that the pair were engaged. And that October, they appeared to get married in a Las Vegas ceremony alongside an Elvis impersonator. However, it was revealed that they did not, in fact, legally wed at the time even though Shia publicly referred to Mia as his “wife.”
2018
In September 2018, a rep for Shia confirmed that he and Mia were headed for a divorce. “Shia and Mia have filed for divorce,” the rep told People at the time. “The separation is amicable and all details pertaining to the divorce proceedings will remain private.”
That year, Shia was romantically linked to singer FKA twigs after the two met while working on Honey Boy. Mia, meanwhile, focused on her own career and life away from Shia. He and FKA twigs split by 2019 following a tumultuous relationship.
2022
After rekindling their love following years of estrangement, Shia and Mia began a new chapter of their relationship as parents. In early 2022, Mia was revealed to have been pregnant with their first child, daughter, Isabel, who was born in early 2022.
Later that year, Shia credited Mia with saving his “f**king life” during an appearance on Jon Bernthal‘s “REAL ONES” podcast.
“She was present for me at a time when I didn’t deserve to have nobody in my life, especially her,” Shia explained.
2025
Shia and Mia separated over the summer of 2025, and they kept their breakup quiet for a while. The Frankenstein actress later cited their official date of separation as July 2025 in her 2026 divorce filing. Multiple outlets further reported that Shia had moved out of their L.A. home and to New Orleans, Louisiana.
2026
In October 2026, Mia made their separation official by filing for divorce from Shia in Los Angeles County. The petition cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split, and noted that she was seeking primary legal and physical custody of their 4-year-old daughter, Isabel, while requesting that Shia receive visitation rights. She also asked in her petition that neither she nor Shia be awarded spousal support.
