According to multiple reports including ESPN’s Shams Charania, sharpshooter Klay Thompson has reach a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks and intends to sign with the Miami Heat. That would allow the Heat to sign their second Hall of Fame level player this offseason. Thompson, while in his late 30s, shot 39 percent from three-point range last season on nearly eight attempts per night.
For a team that needs spacing, that would be welcome.
This has been a long time coming considering there have been many rumors and reports of the Heat’s interest in adding Thompson to the team. No one has done more reporting on this than OnSI’s and Five Reasons Sports Network CEO Ethan J. Skolnick.
This move might come as a surprise to some, but Heat fans have been hoping for this for weeks. This move would strengthen the already fantastic offseason that the Miami Heat front office was having, highlighted by the addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
What Thompson will bring to the Miami Heat.
This addition will greatly improve the Miami Heat’s shooting available on the roster. Thompson is one of the very best shooters the league has ever seen and even though he is past his prime, he is still an elite sniper.
Last season on the Mavericks Thompson shot 38.3% from behind the arc on 7.6 attempts per game. This actually was his worst season from three in his career. Which should not concern anyone because if his floor is 38% the Heat will take that in a heartbeat.
Thompson will now also have the luxury of playing off the gravity of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. This should help him get wide open looks, and any NBA fan knows the former splash brother will torch any defense that leaves him open.
Antetokounmpo should be the perfect pair for Thompson due to his mentioned gravity. The opposing defense will now have to choose to leave a career 40% three point shooter open around the perimeter or leave Antetokounmpo one on one. This is a losing battle for the defense no matter what the defense chooses.
What is next for the Heat?
Even after this signing the Heat still need to make at least one more move, as their roster is still one short of the league minimum of 14 players under contract. This addition does check a box many were saying the Heat needed to improve though.
It will be interesting to see the sentiment about the Heat roster now that they have added elite shooting on top of other capable shooters. Shooting was the first thing many mentioned about the deficiencies of the roster and now this has been dispelled.
