Justin Verlander’s return to the Detroit Tigers didn’t get off to the fairy tale start that many had hoped for when the signing was announced in February, as the veteran got shelled in his season debut, allowing five earned runs and two walks in 3.2 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The next match was an even bigger one for Verlander and the Detroit faithful, as he was set to return to Comerica Park as a Tiger on Sunday night for the first time since the 2017 season, but that will be put on hold.
On Saturday afternoon, it was announced that the 43-year-old would be placed on the 15-day IL due to left hip inflammation.
This will be a certain loss for Detroit, who have struggled to get going this season, posting a record of 3-4 through Friday night’s action against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Who will replace Verlander in the Tigers’ rotation?
In the same breath, the Tigers announced that Keider Montero will be brought up to take the spot of the three-time Cy Young award winner. Montero has been spending time with Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens, making one appearance in which he went for four innings, allowing one hit and fanning three batters.

The Venezuelan was a part of the Tigers’ roster last season, appearing in 20 games, posting an ERA of 4.37 and a WHIP of 1.39.
The Tigers take on the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon and will wrap up the series on Sunday night, with first pitch slated for 7:20 p.m.
