JJ Gabriel has for months been billed as Manchester United’s next great prospect. But, in the blink of an eye, it appears the 15-year-old is trying to engineer a shock exit from Old Trafford.
Gabriel was the first player of his age to play for United when he appeared as a substitute in a preseason game against Atlético Madrid. That unofficial match didn’t count in the record books, but the schoolboy forward stood to become the club’s youngest ever player, needing to make his competitive debut before Oct. 25 to break David Gaskell’s record from 1956.
Last week, Gabriel scored a hat trick against Sabah in a UEFA Youth League thrashing. He was last season’s U-18 Premier League Player of the Year, even though he was just 14 when the campaign began. Gabriel was also the youngest recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Player of the Year award at Old Trafford, presented at the end of every season to the club’s best U-18 player—past winners include Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.
In Premier League 2 this season, Gabriel has two goals and two assists from two matches, and his promise had led many to expect him to be on the bench for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie with Brighton & Hove Albion. But, now, it won’t happen, and there is a risk he could be leaving altogether.

Seeds of doubt about his future emerged in recent days when all trace of Manchester United disappeared from his Instagram account. News from beat reporters at The Athletic and BBC Sportsuggest Gabriel has formally requested that his registration with the club be canceled.
Gabriel is still too young to even sign with the club on the two-year scholar program that comes right before becoming a full-blown professional and ending his registration would immediately make him a free agent. However, United can also refuse to accept the request, with canceled registration requiring three-way agreement between the player, their parent/carer and the club.
According to reports, United are in shock but hopeful there is still time to rectify things, with chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox involved in those efforts. If there is no resolution, the Premier League might need to intervene.

Why Does JJ Gabriel Want to Leave Man Utd?
There appears to be considerable confusion from United’s perspective about what has actually caused this. BBC Sport references “issues in the relationship between the player’s family and United,” while The Athletic and Sky Sports hint at frustration about Gabriel’s opportunities so far. The latter writes that “part of the reasoning for Gabriel’s request to leave is over game time, both in preseason and since the season started.” There has been no problem with his attitude in training.
That a 15-year-old might be dissatisfied over minutes is difficult to comprehend when most players that age couldn’t dream of being anywhere close to first-team action. But Lamine Yamal and, to a much lesser extent, Max Dowman, have changed the goalposts in recent years.
Due to his age not giving him the two year-history for List B eligibility, Gabriel needed to be named on List A to play in the Champions League and Sky Sports goes on to suggest “there is a feeling” from his side that others have had better opportunities. Tynan Thompson, for example, did make List A. The 18-year-old was signed from Tottenham Hotspur’s academy during the summer and is direct competition for Gabriel, primarily a left winger or No. 10. For what it’s worth, Thompson has not yet been chosen in a first-team matchday squad.
United believe “not much more could have been done” to demonstrate that a pathway into the first team does exist for Gabriel. Long before manager Michael Carrick was appointed midway through last season, he was meeting with former boss Ruben Amorim and was even introduced to the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. He has been training at first-team level on occasion for much of the last year but was suddenly absent from the end of last week.
What Impact Would JJ Gabriel’s Exit Have?
In the short term, it isn’t such a problem. Manchester United have other teenage talents on the cusp of first-team involvement, although none seemingly as explosive as Gabriel. Thompson is one, while Liverpool’s Isaac Konde, aged 16 and a winger, will soon be another.
But should Gabriel head elsewhere and ultimately become the world-class star his enormous reputation and clear talents suggests is possible, it would be the ultimate ‘one that got away.’
It’s not clear where would go. Gabriel was born in London, which immediately puts Arsenal or Chelsea in the frame. The Gunners recently poached older academy players James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye from United. Manchester City or Liverpool, now that Gabriel is based in north-west England, could be other options closer to home—he turned down City in 2025.
Alternatively, there is rumored interest from further afield. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have, according to The Athletic, already courted Gabriel. An international transfer might need a workaround given that the U.K. is no longer part of the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA), where players can move within member states from age 16.
