Summer Is Playing the Latest Version of Carrie White

Five decades after the 1976 horror film Carrie premiered, Summer is playing a modern version of the character based on Stephen’s novel.

This iteration of Carrie White has spent her life secluded at home with her overly protective and strict mother, Margaret. After her father’s sudden death forces her into public school and out of the house, Carrie navigates a viral bullying scandal, the pressures of growing up in the age of social media and her newly minted telekinetic powers that she struggles to control.

Showrunner Mike Flanagan has teased that this modernization of Stephen’s character is different than what horror fans are assuming.

“The story of Carrie alone has been told now several times,” Flanagan acknowledged in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “The thing that’s never been delved into is Carrie’s a part of this larger community of women and she never gets to know that. We have a book that fits perfectly into a 90-minute format. We’re talking about a series. Expansion’s essential. So if that’s the mission, how can we earn it? And that was the crux of it. Let’s understand that this is the story about gifted women. Let’s understand that this is a story about young women, in particular, learning their place in the world and coming into their power — and all the pitfalls that come with that.”
