Why Michigan’s Sherrone Moore reminds Justice Haynes of Nick Saban

Justice Haynes has played for some prolific coaches in his short time in college football. The former five-star running back started his career at Alabama before transferring this offseason to Michigan. But before he left Tuscaloosa, he managed to play for two big-time head coaches, Nick Saban and Kalen DeBoer.

And there’s something about his new head coach, Sherrone Moore, that reminds him of the former.

Haynes only spent one year with Saban, but he spoke to On3’s Pete Nakos about his brief time in Ann Arbor thus far, and he shared that Moore is like a younger version of the legendary former Alabama head coach.

“He reminds me of a young Coach Saban in a lot of ways,” Haynes told On3. “He’s going to kick it with you. He’s going to have fun with you. But then there is also a time to be serious and a time to be disciplined. Everything is discipline-oriented around there. We train differently from anyone else in the country. We work harder than anyone in the country, and we’re all about running the ball and stopping the run. That’s what we pride ourselves on, and that’s ultimately what led to my decision. I knew they were going to value the running back position, and I knew I could thrive in the offense.”

Saban, of course, won seven national championships — six with the Crimson Tide and one with LSU. Moore, now entering his second year as a head coach, would love to have a career as storied as the GOAT of college football. At least he can say that he’s beaten his rival, Ohio State, while also taking down the Alabama team that Haynes is just departing in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Fans will get to see Moore coaching the team on August 30 when the Wolverines host New Mexico for the 2025 season opener.
